Jesus Christ is…

Hebrews 13:1-14

13 Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body. Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”

Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited. 10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. 12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. 13 So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. 14 For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.

Do you ever have trouble describing someone? How do you go about trying to describe someone? Do you think you ever fully describe someone? How carefully do you choose your words? Are your words more important than your actions? How do we know that someone we describe is being described accurately? How do we know that others are hearing the words the way we mean them to be heard?

Hebrews says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. What does that mean? Are you the same yesterday and today and forever? I would say I am not the same today that I was ten years ago. I doubt I’ll be the same ten years from now. So, what does the writer of Hebrews mean when he says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever?

There are many descriptions of who Jesus Christ is in the Bible. In addition to the Hebrews description, here are a couple more:

The Ethiopian eunuch told Philip that he believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In my opinion, this may be the most important description of who Jesus is. If we don’t believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then why would we follow Him? Why would we follow His teachings? Why would we commit our lives to Him?

Paul tells the Corinthians to test themselves. They were to test themselves to see if they were in the faith. If they were in the faith, then they would notice that Jesus Christ is in them. Is Jesus Christ in you? Test yourself to see. How is Jesus Christ in you if He is in you?

Paul tells the Philippians that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. What does Paul mean? When we confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, what do we mean? How is Jesus Christ our Lord?

How would you finish the statement “Jesus Christ is…?”
